SOCCER

INTRODUCTION

Despite not playing competitively at club level I've always enjoyed playing soccer. I play in the school yard with my classmates, and every now and again I go over to the park with my friends, but that's about it. However, I also do like sitting down the couch to watch a match or looking up facts about the players on the internet and that is what led me to create a webpage on soccer.

A SHORT HISTORY

The rules of modern soccer, also known as association football were written up in the middle of the ninteenth century. In 1872 the world's first ever international soccer match was played between England and Scotland in Glasgow. The world's oldest soccer tournament, The F.A. Cup was also first played in 1872. The world's most prestigious soccer competition for countries, The F.I.F.A. World Cup was first played in Uruguay in 1930. The hosts ran out the eventual winners. Since the World Cup was first played, 19 competitions have been held (in 1942 and 1946 the World Cup was not contested because of World War II) and 8 countries have won the World Cup. Below, I have given you a list of those 8 countries and how many times each of them has won the World Cup.

BRAZIL: 5 times (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 1902)

ITALY: 4 times (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006)

GERMANY: 3 times (1954, 1974, 1990)

ARGENTINA: 2 times (1978, 1986)

URUGUAY: 2 times (1930, 1950)

FRANCE: 1 time (1998)
