In spite of what you see there was a lot of hardship and the goverment didn't take kindly to people throwing away their litter. So they put these up everywhere:
During World War II lots of the food in Britain came in ships and their enemies sank the ships so they had to grow everything themselves. The BBC 'Radio Allotment' grew 23 different types of vegetables and broadcasted weekly reports on how they were getting on.
