Good Start in the Hurling

A selection of our senior team retained the South Dublin Primary Schools Hurling Tournament title for the third consecutive year with a great win over near neighbours St. Joseph's yesterday. The blitz involved four teams and was played over two Thursdays. Trailing by a point at half time in the final, our boys showed great skill and heart to win and bring the trophy back to St. Pius X for another year.

Congratulations to our Junior Green Hurling Team who beat local rivals Terenure College on Tuesday. The match was a tough test for the players with only a few points separating both sides at the final whistle. A young team with lots of potential, we are sure to see many of them represent the school at senior level in years to come.
Well done too to the management team of Ms Kennedy and Ms Gallagher.

Hurling

In recent years, the St. Pius Hurling Teams have tasted success in a number of grades from third class up to the senior grade. The school is closely affiliated with Faughs GAA Club. Faughs coaches conduct in-school training sessions throughout the year. The sessions consist of skills training, conditioned games and an in-school league. In-school hurling starts from junior infants and continues right up to fourth class.
When boys reach third class, they are invited to train after school and make themselves available to play for the school team in both junior and senior grades. After school training starts in late January in preparation for the tournaments. The addition of the astro-surface on the school yard has been a great success especially during winter months, allowing training to continue despite the closure of local parks and pitches. Home fixtures and after-school training take place in Bushy Park.
Each year teams are entered into the various Cumann na mBunscol leagues. We also participate in an annual South-Dublin Schools Blitz and a Junior Inter-School Blitz. Third class matches are also organised in preparation for the following years of competition. We look forward to seeing our past and present hurlers represent Áth Cliath in the near future.
