Hurling

St. Pius X B.N.S. has a rich tradition of Gaelic Games. In Hurling, from Junior infants, boys are introduced to the skills of the game in a fun and friendly manner through a combination of enthusiastic staff and our experienced Games Promotion Officer (GPO) Tommy from Faughs Hurling club. Boys get the opportunity to develop their fundamental skills once a week, using small-sided games and fun activities.

In the senior end of the school boys get the opportunity to play with the school’s teams which compete in the Dublin Cumann na mBunscol schools leagues. Training takes place in Terenure College with the ultimate goal of getting to Croke Park and winning a cup!

The Hurling season runs in Term 3 when the school enters 5 teams into competitions which accommodates over 90 boys of all abilities. This is in no small thanks to the number of teachers who dedicate their time voluntarily to take teams after school. As well as the school leagues, the school takes part in a number of local interschool blitzes.

St Pius X B.N.S. has a strong connections with Cumann na mBunscol, Dublin Gaa and Croke Park. Our school has been selected to pilot programmes such as the 5 Star Programme as well as other coaching and games initiatives. We are very fortunate to have boys represent Dublin at county level, playing at half time in inter-county matches, representing Dublin at inter-county school blitzes and even being part of All Ireland final days.

In recent years the school has experienced great success in Hurling, reaching Croke Park in 2016 and winning the Sciath Marino. Days in Croke Park are unforgettable and an occasion for the whole school to enjoy.

Keep an eye out in Term 3 for photos of our hurling teams.
